Oil & Classical Music
Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 7:28PM | Who cares about fact that BP is losing $6 million/day? I sure don't. They have enough cash reserves to last them awhile. This entire incident reminds me of the Exxon Valdez spill back in 1989, because I am struck with the same angst that I had back then at the age of 10. What about the animals? The wildlife?
People do not understand the natural microbiota that will be destroyed on the coastline of the South. If the oil runs ashore as they say it will, it will take decades to get rid of. One thing I did notice was a lack of information regarding the physics and detail of the physical spill. What was leaking exactly? Was it a huge hole on the sea floor? What are people doing? Forget CNN or NYTimes.com, I went to BP's website and found interesting stuff in the press release.
For one, there is a website at the bottom called Deepwaterresponse.com, which takes you to an interesting BlogRoll of detailed info about the cleanup, in addition to a FlickR set. Within the set are a variety of really detailed images about the spill. It also includes a video of the submersible ROV trying to close the blowout preventer. The gallery is below:
If anything, NYTimes and other sites should be posting images and links to this, since it clearly seems to be coming from the source of the incident. I have Emailed Rachel Maddow about this in hopes that she can use some of the imagery from the FlickR photostream on her news report.
On a different note, I heard a really interesting and sad show on KCRW on the state of classical music, and how it's disappearing from our culture. I strongly suggest you listen to it.
